URACCAN Nueva Guinea: another "Light in the Jungle"

Abstract

This paper combines the authors’ personal experiences, interests and ideas on what they perceive as two founding events in the history of Nueva Guinea:  the foundation of the settlement Light in the Jungle (Luz en la selva), closely linked to ‘the creation of Nueva Guinea municipality, and the establishment of the section of URACCAN University in Nµeva Guinea. The latter constitutes a seminal event in terms of both present opportunities and future potential for thinking and preservation of collective memories as well as the production of scientific, technical and educational know [edge in this ‘space for cultural contacts’ within the human and political geography of multiethnic al) d multicultural Nicaragua.  The authors describe this space as genuinely Caribbean and non-hegemonic, and as an alternative to Managua’s centralism.
