Abstract

This article analyzes racial themes in Nicaraguan literature.  It deals on the one hand with the color consciousness that Mestizo people have and their attitude towards Blacks, and on the other hand with the celebration of Negritud and the resistance to racism in Nicaraguan literature. It does not deal with Indian issues in Nicaraguan literature. Although the attitude of dominant cultural groups towards Indian people is similar but not exactly the same -there are important differences.  One of these differences lies in the romanticization of the Indian past, i.e., of the dead Indian, which does not occur in the case of the African and Caribbean past.
