Sexual /affective relations among the miskitus of the Atlantic Coast during the XVII and XVIII centuries

Abstract

The subject of this paper is to examine the sexual /affective relations among the Miskitus in the context of colonialism. "Ethnicity” like “class” and "sexuality” are central concepts in this study. In particular it focuses the influence of the British colonialism in the conformation of specifically sexual affective relationships. This article examines the Miskitu men and women’s exogamous and endogamous affective unions in three historical periods: 1.- ethnogenesis (17'h century); 2.­ Miskitu Kingdom (beginning of the 18th century); and 3.- the Samba hegemony (the end of the 18 century).
