Compassion, anger and broken hearts: ontology and the role of language in the miskitu lament

Abstract

This essay about the Miskitu mortuary lament suggests the possibility that these manifestations of emotion are not merely the brute exteriorization of sentiments, but cultural constructions:  at the same time ritual conjuration and expression of a “verbal art" or literary gender.  The evidence presented is both sociocultural and linguistic.
