Towards the development of a comprehensive system for socioeconomic and environmental monitoring in communities of Nicaragua’s Caribbean Coast

A grassroots system of socioeconomic and environmental monitoring is based on the following definition of monitoring; it is the study or periodical evaluation of one or more geographic areas from a basic set of data, this monitoring process allows an understanding of the changes in behaviors that have occurred in rural areas over time. This article proposes a basic indicator in order to develop a comprehensive system of socioeconomic and environmental monitoring system based on empirical data. If this system were to be implemented, decision makers could use it in order to effectively promote sustainable development in Nicaragua’s Caribbean region.
