Abstract

Extinction threatens all the indigenous languages of Nicaragua to some extent.  The socioeconomic transformations, the development of the agriculture frontier, the influence of the media, the increasing integration of the autonomous regions to the rest of the country and many other factors act against the languages of the ethnic minorities.  The article's authors examine these factors for each language and conclude that they are so potent that it will be difficult to resist them in the long term.  They believe that an important battleground in order for these languages to adjust and to spread will be their written use.
