The existing situation with wildlife in the río Escofram watershed twelve years after hurricane Joan

Abstract

The present article is derived from a study done in the Escofram River Basin, to provide base environmental information leading to an impact evaluation far the City of Bluefields water and sanitizing project in the Southern Autonomous Atlantic Region of Nicaragua. This paper focuses on describing and analyzing wild animal species found within such basin, in the areas of both direct and indirect influence. In the Escofram River Basin, there is a more or less continuous area of forest coverage in the riverbanks and its tributaries. These fragmented forests present an acceptable, but perhaps not optimal habitat far diverse wild animal species; specially birds, since some endangered and migrant species were found.
